Best laid plans

I had the perfect day lined up. My best pal was coming over in the afternoon to watch the Lost finale with me. He’s been a fan of the show since it started but I was converted just a few weeks ago when I needed something to watch while editing. I quickly got hooked but I couldn’t quite get through all six seasons by last weeks airing of the finale. Being the incredible friend he is he decided to watch it again and come over.

I had fresh boar tenderloin ready to go and a delicious fruit salsa to go with it. Dharma Initiative kernel corn on the side and a box of Macaroni & Cheese Supper just in case the boar didn’t turn out.

Since it rained all week I had to reschedule alot of shoots so I didn’t go out alot. I decided to take a vacation from shaving for the week. On Thursday Becks looked at me and said ” hey! that will be perfect for your Lost party!” I hadn’t even thought about it but it would be perfect.

Things didn’t work out though. My Grandpa isn’t well and so the day went differently than I had planned. Now it’s late and I’m munching on some beef and broccoli, praying for my Grandma and watching the finale.

How will the real world and the sideways world come together? Will Kate and Jack end up together? Will I ever unbend the pretzel that this show has turned my mind into? I’ve never really felt connected to characters like I did with the ones on the island. Sun and Jin were my favorites, it was such an amazing story to watch unfold.

So just like things will be resolved on the show, things will work out here in the real world to. I remember that life is still about as perfect as I could hope for. This week holds dinner with good friends, photographing a new life that has only been in the world for a week and capturing the love between two people whose wedding I’ll be shooting later this summer.

Tomorrow morning I’ll wake up and shower and shave this beard off, go downstairs and spread some Dharma Peanut Butter on some whole grain toast and get on with the day. Becky will sing off key in the shower. It will be perfect.

I hope your week goes the way you have planned.

Come on in!

Welcome to the new site!

To say that I’m thrilled with the new look wouldn’t even begin to describe it! A HUGE thank you goes to Claire at Presence Web Design for all the time she put into making this a reality. I must have sent over a hundred emails – questions, suggestions and a thousand little changes that I wanted to make to the layout. She always told me not to feel bad about it and was happy to do whatever it took to make things just right. I have a feeling she was being nice because I don’t think people like me are easy to work with.

Come to think of it, looking back on the volume of email I sent her, I don’t think I would want to work with me!

So have a look around, check back often because I’ll be launching a few exciting new ideas this summer and if you want to book a summer shoot just fire me an email and we’ll make it happen!

Since a post is always better with a few pictures, here are a few more from the beautiful Dreams resort in Puerto Vallarta.

grandma’s garden

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

last week I made a trip to warman to help my grandma put her garden in. not that she needs any help of course, she’s done this for fifty years now and has it down to a fine art. people wander by her garden during the summer and ask how she gets things to grow the way she does. tomatoes the size of your fist. strawberries that taste the way you know they should.

so I think my ‘help’ is more of an excuse for us to spend some time together. it was a perfect evening – calm and quiet with just a touch of humidity in the air. her neighbors came over to say hi and chat for a minute while we cleaned up the yard.

I remember when I was a kid they had a garden as big as a park, it seemed to stretch on forever. there was an endless amount of food that came pouring out of that dirt and we knew that it would all be turned into part of that nights feast. I remember watching her quietly shell peas or cut up potatoes while I played at her long kitchen table. I would be busy coloring or putting together a lego castle and every now and again she would bring me over a cookie or a small bowl of raspberries with fresh milk. she never said alot, maybe that’s where I get my quiet demeanor from.

I don’t know if another person has taught me as much as her though. never through words, always through actions.

every single person that came to her house always left with a plate of food. when we went to visit someone she took time to talk with them for a few extra minutes, she was never in a hurry. she still prays for each of her grandkids every day. she still worries about all of us. she went/goes to church every sunday and is the same person the rest of the week as she is during the one hour she spends in that building. she admires how God sends the rain to make her garden grow.

she teaches me how to be the kind of person I know I want to be.

almost four years ago Becky and I spent our honeymoon at the dreams puerto vallarta resort and spa. after months of struggling to make some headway through our fertility issues, long days at work and not quite being able to remember when we last had a week to ourselves we decided it was time for a holiday. being a photographer in saskatchewan means that summers are beyond busy so we thought we would kick the season off right with a week in paradise.

I could go on forever about how amazing our time in mexico was and how delicious the food was and on and on. but the real story for us that week was getting to know some of the staff at the resort a bit. I have never met a harder working group of people and they should be tremendously proud of the experience that they give their guests. we were simply never wanting for anything. the drinks were plentiful and the steaks always perfectly cooked. we didn’t have time to get bored, the hilarious entertainment crew made sure of that. our room was spotless every night when we got back from the beach and one of the girls even gave becks extra chocolates at turn down because she mentioned she liked them so much.

they even had guys who were up at 7 each morning raking every inch of the beach. they looked at me, the only tourist who gets up at 7 am on his week off, like I was crazy.

the guys from the entertainment crew got a hold of our camera during casino night…

we finished our week with a romantic dinner on the beach that the staff set up for us. I didn’t think it was possible for two people to eat as much lobster as we img_3930-2

did that night.
